Juniper Berry oil

Juniper (Juniperus communis)

Juniper is an evergreen conifer growing up to 15m. It has fine twigs with needle like leaves. The plant is either male or female: the female plants have blue flowers and the male plants have yellow flowers. The fruit - the berry, is approximately 0.5 - 1 cm in diameter, globular and purplish to black in colour. They have a characteristic taste and odour.

The berries are used medicinally as is the volatile oil that can be extracted from the fruit. Juniper is native to Europe and is cultivated throughout the world. Juniper berries have antiseptic and diuretic (stimulates urine production) actions on the urinary system.

They are carminative (intestinal gas and indigestion relieving) and stomachic (stomach pain relieving and stomach activity enhancing). They also have an anti-inflammatory activity.
