Clove Oil

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum)

The Clove tree is an evergreen, pyramid shaped tree growing up to 16m. It has soft grey bark and large bright green leaves that resemble large bay leaves.

At the start of the rainy season long green buds appear at the extreme ends of the branches. From these buds delicate peach coloured flowers grow. The flower buds or Cloves are picked unopened and dried for medicinal use. When dried the Cloves are brown and 1-1.5 cm long. When pressed with a fingernail, oil seeps out; the oil being very aromatic and having a characteristic odour.

The volatile oil is extracted and made into an essential oil which is also used medicinally. The Clove tree is native to the Molucca Islands in Indonesia and the Southern Philippines. It is now cultivated in Tanzania, Madagascar, Brazil and other tropical parts of the world. Cloves have many actions. They have a carminative (digestive gas and indigestion relieving) action on the digestive system, they help to prevent vomiting and eliminate intestinal worms.

They are antiseptic, analgesic (painkilling) and antispasmodic (reduces muscle spasm and tone). The herb has stimulating effects on the nervous and digestive systems.
