Elderflower and Elderberry (Sambucus nigra)
The elder tree once identifies is unmistakable. It has a very distinctive smell. The tree flowers in May; the flowers are small, creamy white with yellow anthers. Small, shiny, purple-black berries follow the flowers. Leaves are pinnate with serrate margins.
Elder flower commonly grows in hedges and on waste ground. It is native to Europe and the British Isles.
The flowers, leaves bark and berries are used in Herbal Medicine.
Elderflowers are diaphoretic (promotes sweating) and has a diuretic action on the urinary system. It is also has a moderate anti-inflammatory effect. Elderberries are a mild laxative.
