Prickly Ash

Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum americanum)

It is a small tree whose branches are covered with sharp, strong prickles. The bark is 1mm thick, externally brownish grey, faintly furrowed with whitish patches and flattened spines that are about 5mm long. The berries grow in clusters on the branches and are blue-black and covered by a grey shell. Leaves and berries have an odour similar to lemon oil.

Prickly ash is native to Canada and Central and Western parts of the US where it grows in shady moist sites, such as woodlands. Related species grow in Asia and Africa.

The bark and berries are used in Herbal Medicine.

Prickly ash has diaphoretic (promotes perspiration) and analgesic (pain killing) actions. It is also a circulatory stimulant (increases blood flow). Due to its tannin content the plant is useful in treating diarrhoea.
