Poplar Bark (Populus spp)
The Poplar tree is a large deciduous tree growing to 20m. It has oval buds, which are a little sticky. The leaves are round and toothed.
The Poplar tree prefers damp and moist areas, it can be found growing next to rivers and in valleys. White Poplar and Black Poplar are native to Europe. Another species known as Quaking Aspen is native to North America.
The bark is used medicinally; it occurs as curved or flattened pieces or may be shredded. The outer layer is often removed, leaving a dull brown surface. The inner surface is smooth and varies in colour from white to brown.
Poplar bark has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiseptic actions. It is also stimulating and astringent (tightens mucous membranes and tissues therefore binding and reducing secretions) to the digestive system. It is often used to treat the pains associated with arthritis and rheumatism, and problems associated with the digestive system and urinary tract.
