Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis)
Fumitory is an annual (lives for one year). It flowers in summer with flowers that are slender, tubular, two-lipped and dusky pink with darker tips, in short spikes. The fruit of fumitory is globular and contains one seed. The plant is harvested when in flower with the aerial parts (parts that grow above the ground) of being used for medicinal purposes.
Fumitory is native to Europe and can be found growing throughout Europe and the British Isles, especially in cultivated fields.
It has a weak diuretic (stimulates the flow of urine) action on the kidney. It has a tonic (restorative and nourishing) action on the blood and has the ability to regulate bile flow. It is also laxative.
