Wild Indigo (Baptisa tinctoria)
Wild indigo is a perennial. It can grow up to 1m. It has a smooth stem and clover like leaves, which, along with the root are the parts that are used medicinally. The plant has purplish-blue flowers in small clusters. The roots vary in diameter from 0.2-1.5 cm, the external surface is brown, longitudinally wrinkled and grooved and somewhat warty. A whitish coloured wood and thick bark cover the root.
Wild indigo likes to grow in dry, hilly woods. It is native to eastern parts of North America. It grows from North Carolina to Southern Canada. Wild indigo is a strong antiseptic and immune-stimulant. Its anti-microbial action makes it effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses. It also has a laxative effect on the digestive system.
