Damiana (Tunera diffusa)
Damiana is a small shrub growing to 2m. The leaves are used in herbal preparations - they are aromatic, wedge shaped, 1 cm to 2.5 cm long, 6 mm broad with three to six serrate teeth along the margins. The flowers are small, single and yellow. The leaves have a bitter taste.
Damiana prefers a hot humid climate. It is native to Southern USA, Mexico, Sub-tropical America and parts of Africa. It is cultivated in these places.
Damiana has antidepressant, aphrodisiac (libido exciting) and stimulant (energy producing) actions on the nervous system. It has a tonic effect on the whole body, but especially on the nervous system. The plant has stomachic (stomach pain relieving) and mild laxative properties. Damiana has an emmenagogue effect (stimulates menstrual flow) and is restorative to the reproductive organs, particularly of the male.
