Southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum)
The Southernwood is the southern Wormwood - the Wormwoods being members of the Compositae family. The family contains 180 species, of which four grow wild in England. Southernwood, although not endemic to the UK is found in many gardens having been introduced in the 16th Century.
The whole herb, collected in August and dried is the part used medicinally. Southernwood has emmenagogue (promotes menstrual flow), anthelmintic (elimination of worms), antiseptic and deobstruent (opening natural passages of the body) properties. It also acts as a tonic.
