Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)
Witch hazel is a deciduous woodland tree native to North America. Its leaves are broadly oval, up to 15 cm long and 7 cm broad, reminiscent of the oak leaf. The tree grows to 5m.
The parts used for medicinal purposes are the leaves, twigs and bark. Witch Hazel is astringent and haemostatic (helps prevent and stop bledding). A common product is distilled witch hazel water used on sprains and bruises. This is also known as Hamamelis water.
