Marshmallow root

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)

A downy perennial reaching up to 2m. Leaves are broadly ovate, 10 - 20 cm long and about 10 cm wide with 3 - 7 rounded lobes. The flowers are pink, five petalled and up to 3 cm in diameter. Meadowsweet is native to Britain and Europe but now is naturised in the USA.

It prefers damp places in which to grow such as ditches and upper salt marshes near the sea. The leaves and roots are used for medicinal purposes. Marshmallow has demulcent (soothes the alimentary canal), emollient (softening and soothing) and expectorant (loosening phlegm) properties.
