Poke Root (Phytolacca Ddecandra)
Poke root is a perennial shrub. It grows to approximately 3m in height with multiple, smooth stems that have a reddish tinge and rise stoutly to support the plentiful distribution of leaves and flowers.
The leaves are 12 - 20 cm long, are egg shaped with wavy edges. The flowers are found on leafless stems and have a greenish-white appearance. The shrub bears fleshy purple-black berries, about 8 mm in diameter, each containing one lens-shaped seed.
The plant has very distinctive irregularly branched, fleshy roots. This shrub is native to the Central, Eastern and Southern United States. It is found growing in damp woodlands, hedges and waste places. The parts used for medicinal purposes are the roots and the berry. The plant root is an excellent alterative i.e. it acts at a cellular level to gradually restore the proper function of the body. It is a potent stimulant of the lymphatic system. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic properties. It has anti-viral actions.
