Buchu (Barosma betulina)
Buchu is a bushy shrub, which can grow up to two metres in height. It has white flowers with small petals. The leaves are slightly leathery, pale green and have round oil glands. They have a strongly aromatic taste and a peppermint odour.
Buchu is native to South Africa. To thrive, it needs well-drained soils and plenty of sun.
It is the leaves that are used medicinally.
Buchu has antiseptic and diuretic (stimulates the flow of urine) actions on the urinary system which make it an extremely effective remedy for treating ailments including, cystitis, painful urination, urethritis and prostatitis.
