Bog Bean (Menyanthes trifoliata)
The plant, a native of Britain and Europe, grows in bogs and shallow water. A creeping perennial with trefoil leaves and spikes of pink and white flowers. Grows to a height of 30 cm. Flowers in April - June when the leaves are gathered. The leaves are the parts of the plant that are used medicinally.
Bogbean is a strongly bitter herb that encourages appetite and stimulation digestive secretions. It is deobstruent (clears away obstructions by opening the natural passages of the body). It is a laxative in large doses.
