Burdock root

Burdock (Arctium lappa)

It is a tall plant, with broad, blunt heart shaped leaves up to about 40cm long. The plant does not flower until the second year. Although Burdock is from the daisy family, its flowers look very different to the well-known daisy. Flowerheads are purple, globular, with hooked bracts forming burrs. The fruits are brownish-grey, wrinkled, about 6mm long and 4mm broad. The root is longitudinally furrowed on the outside and white inside.

Burdock grows in temperate regions throughout the world, including the USA and China. It is native to Europe and parts of Asia, where it grows in hedges and ditches.

The root and leaves are used most in Western Medicine, the fruit is used more in Oriental Medicine.

Burdock has very effective detoxifying and cleansing actions within the body. It is also diuretic (stimulates the flow of urine), laxative and diaphoretic (promotes perspiration). Because of these properties it is an effective remedy where ever toxins need to be removed from the body, for example, arthritis, skin conditions, et cetera. The plant has antibiotic properties and is believed to be able to inhibit tumour growth.
