Shepherd's Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)
Shepherd's purse has an erect stem and lanceolate, pinnately lobed leaves that are arranged in a basal rosette. The plant flowers once or twice a year and at any time of the year. It has white flowers with four petals and heart shaped seedpods.
This plant is usually found growing in sunny gardens and flowerbeds and is considered a weed. It can often be found in the wild growing along the edges of paths or on other disturbed ground. Shepherd's purse is believed to be native to Europe and Asia, but is now found throughout most temperate regions The aerial parts are used medicinally.
Shepherd's purse has antihaemorrhagic, astringent and urinary antiseptic properties. Traditionally used for halting bleeding. It is one of the best remedies for halting heavy uterine bleeding, but may be used for any bleeding both internal and external. It is taken for diarrhoea and in some parts of the world is prescribed for dysentery.
