Clivers (Cleavers) (Galium aparine)
It is a straggling plant growing up to 2 metres in height by clinging on to other vegetation. The aerial parts (parts that grow above the ground) are used in Herbal Medicine. Its leaves are lanceolate (shaped like a lance), about 1-2 cm long and 0.5 cm broad in whorls of six. The plant flowers once a year having flowers that are small and greenish white. Its fruit is round, 3 mm in diameter, forming small burrs and covered in hooked bristles. These cling to virtually any material or animal with which they come in to contact, and thus are distributed widely.
Clivers grows throughout Britain and Europe and is very common in hedgerows. It also grows in the USA and Canada. It is often seen scrabbling through bushes and hedges, clinging to them.
Parts used: aerial parts.
Clivers is diuretic (stimulates the flow of urine) detoxifying, anti-inflammatory and is an excellent tonic (restorative and nourishing) to the lymphatic system. This herb has the ability to make alterations within the body at a cellular level, increasing the renewal of tissue so it can carry out its function more efficiently.
